XFT Speed System


Set up three dummies to represent lead blockers that have gotten down field. Have a runner behind them. Set this drill up to both sides of the field so you can work both the attack side and the chase side of the drill. The DL will rush as they normally do. Have youth american football drills the QB (coach) drop back five steps and then float back two more steps and deliver the ball to one side or other of the offense. The DL, upon seeing the odd drop, should then settle and react to the throw. The DL nearest the QB should continue to rush.

This player wants to attack all blockers with the inside arm and tackle the outside leg of the ball carrier. The reason for the tackling of the outside leg, is that if the corner loses the receiver he should lose him back to the inside where pursuit is coming from. The defenders on the far side of the defense should get in pursuit mode once they see the ball has been thrown.

The half turn is commonly used by center's with smaller hands whoneed both hands to control the ball. This method begins by placingboth hands on the ball with thumbs together on the top of the balland with the laces on the side of the quarterback's throwing arm. Then the center moves the ball up and back to the quarterback'shands. The ball will rotate vertically 180 degrees so thatthe point that was touching the ground will now be pointing to thesky when the quarterback takes the ball and the laces will still beon the side of quarterback's throwing arm, ready for him to grab.

Running practice scrimmages against your own offense and defense The one team I guarantee you will not face during the season is your own. You should never run your offense against your defense with the possible exception of an initial scrimmage or two where you are evaluating your players abilities youth football drills first day pads to execute your schemes and you do not yet have scouting information on upcoming opponents. As we discussed, a linebacker has to be quick and light on the feet. In a line, keep 5 stand-up dummies at least 3 yards from one another. From the 5th dummy, keep a cone at least 5 yards away. Have the linebacker stand in front of the 1st dummy in the proper linebacker stance. When the coach signals, the player will shuffle himself/herself through the dummies. The objective is to pop the hips quickly and swiftly while shuffling. The linebacker has to maintain good leverage by keeping the shoulders down and eyes up and straight ahead. After the 5th dummy is passed, head straight towards the cone.


Cones are placed along the sidelines and numbered one through 11. As you can see, from the diagram, each player has a cone that he must run to. Once the player gets to the cone, they are to turn back and face the middle of the field in a hit position and foot-fire until the coach blows the whistle. If the rep was not done at full-tilt, then those players return to their original alignment and do the drill over again. The corners should flip-flop every play so as not to kill the corner that has to run the farthest.

This drill is also known as 'one touch passing' or a 'one-two'. This is a great exercise for indoor soccer, as it helps improve the shooting ability of a player without having much time to control the ball. It builds instincts and basic technique. There are two players involved in this drill. The first one passes the ball to the second player and immediately runs forward. The second player, meanwhile, takes only a single touch and lays the ball in the path of the first player. The first player must then shoot for the goal without breaking his stride.


As a practical matter, one offensive play is not enough. You need at least four offensive plays. That means so far you have to put in eleven different offensive and special teams plays plus defenses. Both first and second string must know how to do the play or stop. Furthermore, your offense must know how to block each offensive play against each of your upcoming opponent's defenses and your defense must know how to line up against each of your opponent's offensive formations , how to react to various shifts and motions , and how to read each of their plays


What is needed is a results orientation Results-oriented coaches run a play and tape it. Then they look at the tape. If the play failed, they scrutinize the tape to figure out why. Then they fix the problem. 95% of the time on offense, the problem will be a player not knowing whom he was supposed to block. If you focus on results rather than process , you will soon discover that virtually all of your offensive problems and about half of your defensive problems stem from players not knowing assignments. And your team will start winning.


Practice running routes - Place a cone about 10 yards off the line of scrimmage and another approximately 7 yards to the left of that. On the whistle (or simulated snap) run hard to the first cone. When you reach the cone, plant your lead foot down hard, lowering your weight, and "break" to the cone on the left. Concentrate on using full power on your moves, coming off line, planting your leg, and moving to your left. Perform this move on the other side as well to balance out your muscle growth.


Post-Corner Route – Place a cone about 15 yards off the line of scrimmage and another approximately 10 yards beyond the first at a 120-degree angle. Come off the line with speed and cut to the inside at the first cone towards the second one. You want to be looking dangerous youth football drills straight ahead before you cut. The idea here is to make the corner believe you are running a post pattern. When you reach the second cone, plant your leg and cut hard to the sidelines at a 45-degree angle. Look over your outside shoulder for the ball.

DO NOT settle for poor effort. Poor effort results in more pursuit drills being added on to the total for the day. Vary the total daily, if necessary, and even omit them if your team has had a good defensive game, or a very good practice. You do not need to do these daily, but I do recommend doing them daily during the weeks leading up to your first regular season game. After that we tone them down to about twice a week until mid-October and then we only run the once a week after that. I cannot stress this coaching point enough!


The solution to players abandoning their responsibilities too soon is to have your scout offense run the problem play in question over and over. Indeed, you may want to have the scout offense use multiple balls so that there is always a ball carrier running a sweep on every single play in practice. Another alternative is to run your scrimmages with no football and have the various defenders tackle the faking ball carrier in their area of responsibility every single time. This no-ball method of practice is often used in preparation for playing a triple-option team or a wing-T team with excellent faking skills.


One simple way to practice covering kickoffs is to drill it going horizontal on your field, using the yard lines as boundaries for your drills You can set one kick coverage player every 5 yards, squarely in the middle of every 5 yard marking. Start this drill with each coverage player lined up on the sidelines facing the opposite sidelines. To simulate blocking, you can have one offensive player set up as a blocker with a hand shield, 10 yards in front of each defender. Have your kicker kick with the cover team sprinting on the kick and staying in their 'lanes' for the first 15 yards.


Mark out the corners and center of your Dot Drill box with the field paint on the grass using numbers 1-5. At age 10-11 the first box has the numbers 2 feet apart, the second box has the numbers about 6 feet apart. On box 1 you can do the traditional dot drill as mentioned above. Some renditions of this drill also can include when getting to the back of the box jumping to turn the opposite direction and then coming back the starting point face first rather than backwards. Or you can hop from the starting point to the back of the box and skip the center dot etc.

Running_Back Handoff Drill - This running_back drill teaches the technical aspects of buying a handoff. The ball player should build a pocket with the arms, the inner one number one and the lower arm cradling the ball. Line up players by two lines about 10 yards apart and facing the other person. The primary player takes the football and hands to the participant opposite him. That player then hands off to the running_back coming from the other way and the like. Once these steps have been repped, we add in the coach with the tennis ball. The coach is at a 60 degree angle to the inside of the offensive linemen and about 1 yard along that 60 degree path away from the player. On the snap count the offensive linemen takes his first step as outlined above and then takes his second step along the line to the coach using the above technique. Vary the distance and height to force your offensive linemen to perform the drill to their individual speed potential.


Use of the eyes is an underrated skill for players. Heck, if not given a focal point, many players won’t know what to look at! Any football drill which requires the player to use his vision and report on it is critical. Asking a QB to call routes that come open in a scramble drill can be useful. Asking defensive backs to yell out the routes will only help your defense against the pass, and will help the defender to focus on his key. For offensive linemen, making a call to their teammate on a combination block when they leave for the linebacker can be important.

If players still choose not to engage after using this approach and these techniques it’s time for you to talk to the player away from the team. Players must trust you in order for you to be heard. That means they must know you care. Use his name a lot, smile, let him know you are glad he is part of your team. Compliment him on the things he does well, make sure he feels part of the team and then ask him how he is enjoying his football experience. Bring up the contact issue and let him talk.


My good friend Tony Holland from Maryland solved this one. He went to Walmart and bought several camping air mattresses for $65 each. Each mattress is big enough to be a landing pad all by itself. These things roll up into a small box too, so you don't need a pickup to lug them banned youth football drills around. The first year we went to this methodology we were a bit nervous, we had always been conditioning fanatics. We were always going to win through better conditioning, but our results were mixed. Our first game using this methodology was Labor Day weekend 8 seasons ago and it was about 95 degrees out and about 80% humidity, it was a steam bath. We were really concerned about our kids being able to play 4 quarters of football in those kinds of conditions as we had not run a single gasser or lap in the 4 weeks leading up to this game.


The thing that really impressed me from this game was what happened after it. Many of the boys on this team had older brothers playing in the following game, so the kids stuck around. What did these kids do after this game in 95 degree heat? The went behind the game field in the warm up area and were playing full speed touch football including kickoffs and punts on a 60 yard field. These kids weren't sitting under a tree exhausted from the game, they were going all out for another 60 minutes, almost non-stop in 90+ degree heat!


A linebacker is a very important player in the team (yes, every player is important. But when you read what I have to say, you'll agree as well). In American football, a linebacker is a defensive player. There are basically 2 types of linebackers - middle and outside linebackers. During the game, they stand in different positions assigned to them on the field. Their position on the field is about 3 to 4 yards from the defensive line (line of scrimmage). They take this position way before the ball has the chance to be snapped (snatched).
